'60s Bands In America Pt I

October 3rd 2008 18:26
Okay ... we've covered a lot of ground about the British -- but what about the guys here in America, who were fightin' for our musical freedom? Yeah, I know the scene exploded after The Beatles hit our shores, but ... weren't there any true stateside bands that stood out in '64?

You bet yer sweet bippy there were! For example:

ya had Paul Revere and The Raiders, who (huh?? Yes, that was them ... circa 1961!) first started as a "normal" rock ensemble (their leader, a guy honestly named Revere Dick, changed his name to fit the band) and had some minor hits with Louie Louie (remember: no "comma" between the two!) and Like Long Hair.
After rummaging through a costume store and finding 18th-Century outfits, they decided to adopt the look to the name, and the Raiders we knew were born!
But there was something else: For whatever reason, the crazy getups also sparked the band's Marxist ways -- Groucho Marx, that is! Their show became a mix of great music and madcap humor ... and (as evidenced by their string of hits) the fans loved it! Their music was based on rhythm rather than radical beat or lead guitar. If ya listen to Mark Lindsay's vocals, you'll find that it actually accents or complements that rhythm.

And, of all their songs, the one that made the most impact was, undoubtedly, KICKS. Y'see, the writers (Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil) had a young friend who was addicted to drugs, and they wanted to find some way of helping her beat the menace. Thus, the song was written.
But when Paul and the band recorded and released it, the effect was fantastic! While it influenced many young "users" across the nation to "get straight" (I know of a few personally!), thousands more were kept from drugs by its rockin', but straightforward, message.

Amazing what rock can do, huh??

A quick footnote: Paul (now 70 years old) and band are still cuttin' up and kickin' butt with their music in tremendous shows they perform at Dick Clark's American Bandstand arena in Branson, Missouri. Of course, they still do the "outside" gigs, so, whenever ya get a chance, ya just gotta take these rock legends/masters/clowns in, k?

See ya on the flip side with more (gimme about 24, okay?)!!
