Cliff Richard Comes OUT?? (and other news)
September 5th 2008 06:22
He's known as the biggest-selling male solo rock artist, next to Elvis Presley. From early songs like Move It, Living Doll and It's All In The Game to We Don't Talk Anymore, (She's Just A) Devil Woman and Dreamin' in the late '70s and early '80s, Cliff Richard showed he could command the charts at any given time!
His support band, The Shadows, influenced the greatest band in the world (The Beatles) and had a tremendous life of their own (Apache, Wonderful Land). Recently, he had a row with Beatle fans and reporters alike, considering himself greater than the Fab Four.
But, now, through his newly-published autobiography My Life, My Way, he hints at possibly a ... different ... side of him. In the book, he admits that his "companion" over the past seven years has been a former Roman Catholic priest.
When finally and openly asked about his sexual preference, he hedged the issue (to some, an implied admission) by saying, "I am sick to death of the media's speculation about it. What business is it of anyone else's what any of us are as individuals? I don't think my fans would care either way."
Yeah, I've gotta agree ... but only on that last point. Sir Cliff's gotta realize that, if he is gay, it's not gonna hurt his career unless he hides it! I mean, lookit Sir Elton John, Melissa Etheridge and, of course, Ellen DeGeneres. Fine acts, all ... but also open! If "fans (wouldn't) care either way," then why hide it?
Bottom line, Sir C: If you are, admit it. If you're not, admit it. Fans will do more than dig your music, then ... they'd appreciate and respect you for your honesty.
HEY ... LET'S GET ON TO OTHER NEWS:
In the next few months, look for songstress Sheryl Crow to finally hook up with Fleetwood Mac as its newest member! She announced this earlier this year. Can you imagine the Buckingham/Crow collaborations?? Christine has said she's not gonna be back, incidentally but, as far as I know, Stevie will be rejoining them.
Bob Dylan. The name itself speaks volumes; I dunno if there's anyone who isn't familiar with the breathy, sometimes-indecipherable vocals of his early songs (in fact, didja know that, years ago, a radio station in Texas actually banned his tunes for awhile -- simply because they couldn't understand what he was singing?).
Well, it turns out that Dylan developed his "style" in honor of his idol, the late Woody Guthrie. Yep -- Guthrie sang the same way. But, unlike Bob, Woody had a medical reason for his voice sounding as it did: he suffered from Huntington's disease. And Dylan didn't realize that until Mrs. Guthrie heard him and thought he was mocking Woody's disorder! Yep ... got mad as hxxl ... and, by the 1970's, you heard Dylan start to tone it down ...
And, on the London stage, the musical Grease is set to debut on 14 January; but, in this one, there's a new Teen Angel (wasn't the original played by Frankie Avalon?). It's gonna be Jimmy Osmond, youngest of the Brothers who had a solo hit in the states years ago with Long-Haired Lover from Liverpool.
Well, that's it for this episode. Tune in tomorrow for some fresh news, views and vids (as well as a follow-up to the Dave Clark Dupe). Until then, remember:
Keep yer eyes on the skies, yer feet on the ground, yer heart with the music ...
and I'll see ya on the flip side!
