As we all know, he didn't make it.
He met another car -- driven by a Cal Tech student -- head-on at the junction of Highways 41 and 466 near Cholame. Dean was nearly decapitated ... and died en route to the Passo Robles Hospital.
But, despite police and coroner reports, questions still remain about the incident. Was it an accident ... or was it a well-planned suicide?
For example: When Dean saw Turnupseed's vehicle turning left and heading toward him, why didn't he decrease his speed, or veer away from the vehicle? He only yelled to his driver, "He's got to see us."
Now, some have stated that Weutherich's role as Porsche factory mechanic is proof that Dean expected some kind of damage! But it must be remembered: they were heading for a motor rally, and mechanics of his calibre are expected!
It's true that Hollywood was already looking at Dean as a star who'd already novaed and was heading for "B" movies at best. He'd begun to gain weight, and was beginning to feel a bit anxious over his career's direction.
But was that anxiety -- and Tinseltown's turn -- enough to drive him to suicide?
