Sometimes, words just don't do it ...
I'm pre-empting our regular mysteries tour to talk a moment about one of my best friends -- one who made so many of us laugh with his upbeat, madcap antics on his show, made us rock to some of the greatest names in the business: Sonny and Cher, The Turtles, The Beau Brummels, Ben E. King, The Byrds and more, and inspired us over the years with his sincerity, honesty and motivation.
I was privileged to meet Lloyd Thaxton a few years ago -- and, from that meeting came a friendship that lasted ... until Sunday night ...
Lloyd Eugene Thaxton -- former DJ who went on to greater glory as host of The Lloyd Thaxton Show, segment-producer on the Today Show, producer of Fight Back! (with David Horowitz), co-author of the best-selling Stuff Happens (and then you fix it!) with John Alston, and, most importantly, producer of the beautiful Jennifer Weatherly, sons and happiness in his lovely wife, Barbara -- has now left us for the greatest glory of all.
He passed away at the age of 81 of multiple myeloma (a cancer of the plasma in one's system).
And, now, there are five finger people who are sadly waving their last "good-bye", and wiping a tear from the face of rock-n-roll. Lloyd's legendary figuring, The DAWK, has laid down his protest sign and bowed his head.
R. I. P., my friend. You'll be missed.
Say "hey" to John, Jimi, Pearl and the rest when ya see 'em, okay?
