Reasons for Ringo's Refusal?
October 14th 2008 19:46
By now, everybody who ever followed The Beatles or their illustrious, left-handed drummer are wondering, "What in xxxx is wrong with that guy?" With a vidclip in which his words seem almost slurred and flashes the peace sign like his fingers are gonna fall off (no "blisters" on 'em this time!), he said:
"It's (any autograph request) going to be tossed (beginning Oct. 20). I'm warning you with peace and love, I have too much to do. So no more fan mail. Thank you, thank you. And no objects to be signed. Nothing. Anyway, peace and love, peace and love."
Now, let's take a look at the Ringed One: First, he repeated peace and love as if he were thinking, "Alright ... it's what I'm known by, so I guess I've gotta say it to save face." That's not the Ringo we knew.
And what about "I'm warning you with peace and love"? Why the warning? Doesn't Starkey understand that "warning" invokes a feeling of agitation and unrest? Then wouldn't that make his intro a dichotomy?
Secondly, let's look at him physically: Yes, he's 68 -- but, if you think it's his age affecting him, think again. From Chuck Berry to Tony Bennett to many of the Invasion stars, we've learned that age is NOT a problem!
However, there have been reports that Ringo has had some Parkinson's-like trouble with his hands lately; and he's also been under a lot of time restraints since the Liverpool 8 show (and subsequent album). So there's a distinct possibility that a combination of all these could be a factor. Bottom line: STARKEY IS JUST WORN DOWN!
To that end, he might have to be on medications, pain meds or whatever as well. That could easily explain the staggered speech pattern and overdone "peace and love" motto (btw, I honestly hope we ALL adopt that motto ... but in our living, active hearts! We need it more now than at any time since the Sixties!).
(btw: Just for a quick breather: DIDJA KNOW that on August 31, 1984, a minor planet was discovered by Lowell Observatory ... and named Starr, in honor of Ringo?)
Ringo deserves the break. Even from yesteryear, he wasn't really keen on signing autographs or anything ... but, now, having been in the business for over 50 years, going through some ups and downs that could level an everyday bloke, he needs the time to devote to himself .. to his work ... to his family. He's still truly a superSTARR!!
Okay ... that's it for RockNews for now. Tune in tomorrow for some special updates.
See ya on the flip side!
