THE KINKS to Reunite??
September 7th 2008 08:11
A few months back, Ray Davies held a Kinks-sized carrot in front of the face of rock and tempted us with the announcement that a reunion of the original Kinks lineup (Ray, his brother Dave on lead guitar, bassist Pete Quaife and Mick Avory on drums) was imminent.
In fact, tens of thousands of fans were thrilled with the news that they were planning a tour this year, on the heels of the famous Led Zeppelin reunion.
BUT ...
Now Dave says it's unlikely. According to him, a reunion of the band would be like "a rerun of Night of The Livin' Dead". Besides, he's still recovering from a stroke he had back in 2004, and Mick has had some serious problems with this kidneys.
He's also said that his brother has been playing "Karaoke Kinks" since the band's breakup in 1996. In the midst of this tirade, Ray's optimistic. He feels that, at least, his brother's speaking out about it, so it's on his mind; if there, then it's still a possibility!
SWEET HOME WHERE??
Of all the bands that America's churned out over the past thirty-plus years, none of them can come close to the history, sound and legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Not only did they survive a deadly plane crash that took the lives of Cassie and Steve Gaines and Ronnie Van Zandt (btw, four other LS members have died since that day in '77), but their song, Sweet Home Alabama, has become one of the most covered songs in rock history!
We've recently heard it tastefully honored in Kid Rock's All Summer Long (this is bound to become a classic!) and, yes, even chickens clucking a version of it in the background of a KFC commercial!
Truth is, this band has successfully blended mainstream rock with Southern country. But they also teach all of us the importance of perseverance despite setbacks. And, though Alabama really needs an update (how many kids remember Watergate, or what Neil Young actually sang about Alabama?), their songs will definitely live on for generations!
(BTW: Didja know they got their name from an old high school gym teacher who had two of the band suspended back in the day? His name was ... Leonard Skinner!)
Well, that's it for now, yardbirds! So, until tomorrow, remember:
Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music ...
and I'll see ya on the flip side!
