The Mysterious Curse of 27

October 11th 2008 07:43
It's one of the most mysterious topics of the classic-rock era: All of the legends you see on your left died at the age of 27. Even after Jimi, Jim, Pearl, Kurt, Brian and Tom, there've been others who've followed suit -- many by their own hand -- and at the same age.

But the question is: WHY?!? What's so significant about the "Curse of 27"? And, in fact, is it real?? After all, John Lennon remained alive for 13 years after; so did Mick Jagger and others!

Psychologists tell us that, as young adults, we don't really come to our first real crossroads in life until that age; what we've done beforehand usually "sets the stage" for adulthood, but it's at around 27 when our first major challenges hit us.* By itself, it's enough to make us change emotional horses ...

But, when you add factors like aloneness (differs from "loneliness". One can be lonely in a crowd, or alone and not be lonely), substance abuse, and inordinate pressure, it can result in suicidal thoughts ... or the act itself ...

John Lennon, of course, had two buffers; his band, The Beatles (and subsequent recording dates and songwriting) and his creativity. He was also becoming more introspective about the universe.

Mick Jagger, on the other hand, also had his band The Rolling Stones, but also took a high road by working in films and keeping himself occupied with other projects.
They also realized what the drugs could do to their careers, so, while they still indulged, they kept it from controlling them completely.

Now, of the six I mentioned from the pic, deaths of two of 'em (Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain) are still being debated -- the possibility of Morrison's death being "faked" is still considered real; and Cobain's was possibly the result of murder, set up to look like a suicide.

* the statistics are national in scope, and may not reflect you, personally ...

TO PUT THIS TO REST: THE REAL LYRICS TO LOUIE LOUIE

Okay ... here's a quick response to another mystery: The actual lyrics to The Kingsmen's Louie Louie. The song's been called "slurred musical porn" and "Satanic in disguise". Well, let's see: THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ACTUAL LYRICS OF LOUIE LOUIE by RICHARD BERRY, circa 1955 (when it was written):

CHORUS:

Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go

Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home

CHORUS

Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.

CHORUS

Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!

GUITAR SOLO

See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again

CHORUS

Let's take it on outa here now
Let's go!!

Okay, that's it for this rock mystery. Tune in tomorrow night for more! Until then ...
I'll see ya on the flip side!
