The Mystery of I AM THE WALRUS Revealed!

September 26th 2008 09:07
If there's any song in the Beatles' library that's caused more confusion and study than the others, it's gotta be I Am The Walrus.-- the flip side of their single, Hello, Goodbye and one of the fave tracks from their Magical Mystery Tour LP.

While most of The Fab Four's tunes were covered by other artists, this one stood alone (perhaps with the exception of The Fab Faux, who does a spot-on version of it). It was mentioned in a few others' hits, such as Garden Party by Rick Nelson and Mrs. Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel.

But who was the "Walrus"? In the song, John says he is. 'Course, he also said he's the Egg-Man. Others have hinted at George being the main character (given the fact that Harrison, like a walrus, was so quiet). We know that Ringo was the "Billy Shears" of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
, so he's out of the running (listen to track 1 of Ringo! -- a song called I'm The Greatest -- where he sings Yes, my name is Billy Shears; you know I have been for so many years).
That leaves Paul. The thought, here, was the little scat after the word Walrus (koo-koo-ka-choob) , which coulda been a poke at Paul's light, melodic songwriting. But was it??

AND NOW ... THE SECRET UNCOVERED

While schoolkids would speak the quizzical lyrics, thinking it was cool; while musicologists were tryin' to figure out what John meant by the lyrics; while parents and other stiff-shirts swore that it was just their drug hallucinations on a recording, they all missed the point:

The song, I AM THE WALRUS, (with the exception of the bridge [ie, sitting in an English garden, waiting for the sun]) meant absolutely ... NOTHING AT ALL!! John purposely wrote it just from the first words or phrases that entered his head. It was meant to mean nothing! He did it to deliver a swift kick-in-the-pants to everyone who was trying to "read into" the Beatles' material!
And The Walrus?? It was John all along. Egg-man was just another word for a band member. But, being that, he was also the leader of the foursome! So, he was ... The WALRUS! The rest of the song, as I said (with the aforementioned exception), was just a bunch of words and phrases put together off the top of his head. Nothing more ...

But if you just have to read something into the song, consider the anagram for the song title: AREA WITH SLUMS, WARTIME HULAS, ALIAS THREW UM, AWAIT ME HURLS and the common complaint, EMAIL WAS HURT.

'Cause, at 5 AM, EST, I'm gonna close 'er down for a bit and get my standard 360 inside-the-eyelid inspection! So, until tomorrow, remember ...

Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music ...
and I'll see ya on the flip side!
