The Paul McCartney Death Hoax

October 17th 2008 08:50
In 1969, one of the most bizarre of all chapters in The Beatles story came to light. According to various radio reports, Paul McCartney was dead. The bassist we heard on subsequent recordings was actually WIlliam Campbell, who was already considered a Macca lookalike who not only sounded like Paul but also wrote like him!

The most popular story goes that, in November 1966, Paul crashed his Aston-Martin in a head-on as he ran through a stop light (one of the first "clues" were the first verses in the song A Day In The Life, which allegedly told what happened). Of course, there were many other "hidden clues" in songs, some of which one could "hear" when playing a track backward.

But is Paul McCartney -- the real one -- actually dead?? Of course not.

The rumor was actually begun by college students some time before 1969. When it reached Detroit DJ Russ Gibb, he broadcast it over the air and, natch, the rumor took off like a rocket! WHen a female DJ from WABC announced it rather incoherently (grief?), she was fired ... but, with their frequency and power, people around the world head the news. Grassroots "research" of albums (tracks and jackets) was mixed with "professional" queries. After years of these investigations, the "death" was still unproved. The clues -- which, incidentally, lasted all the way through John Lennon's Free As A Bird -- turned up nothing. For the origin of the rumor, just click this link.

It's been said that, due to the band's less-than-stellar turnout at their last performance in Candlestick Park (San Francisco), coupled with the bad press they received, The Beatles were afraid they'd soon be slipping sales-wise. Somehow, they needed to "stay on top", especially with other, newer bands now vying for the heights they once shared. Thus, the "death" rumor was begun.

However, it's been proved that today's Paul is the "real deal" -- and he not only is one of the richest and most talented artist on the rock circuit, but also a tremendous success onstage!

And a dead man can't do that, can he?
