The Song That Saved Lives
October 1st 2008 07:44
One of the sad side-effects of the 1960s was the depression felt by countless teenagers because they didn't make the "in" crowd. Whether it was due to shyness, where they lived, personal troubles or whatever, it still hurt. Deeply. I mean, who doesn't want to "belong" or "fit in" somewhere?
Sometimes, these kids would have a disability, weight problem or a loss that just made it all worse -- and, for some, the combination was too much ... and caused them to entertain thoughts of suicide.
Enter one song ... recorded by a young, one-handed drummer and backed by a group that, later on, would be known simply as The Band.
Enter "Moulty" Moulton of The Barbarians, tellin' his life story in the inspiring song, Moulty!:
I remember the days when
Things were real bad for me
It was right after my accident
When I lost my hand
It seemed like I was all alone
With nobody to help me
You know, I almost gave up
All my hopes and dreams
But then, then, then something
Inside me kept telling me
Way down inside of me
Over and over again
To keep going on, yeah, on
Moulty!
Don't turn away
(You're gonna make it, baby)
Don't turn away
(Ah, try to make it, baby)
Don't turn away
Things are better for me now
Cause I found that I love music
So I learned to play the drums
And got myself a band and now
We're starting to make it
And if you can make it
At something you love
Wow, you got it all
So I'm saying this to all of you
All of you who think you'll never make it
All of you guys and girls
Cause you think you're so bad off
Or maybe you think you're
A little different or strange
So listen to me now
Cause I've lived through it all
Moulty!
Don't turn away
(You gotta keep on trying)
Don't turn away
(Well, don't you give up, baby)
Don't turn away
Now there's just one thing that I need
Not sympathy and I don't want no pity
But a girl, a real girl
One that really loves me
And then I'll be the complete man
So I'm gonna tell you right now, listen
Don't turn away (you gotta, baby)
Don't turn away (you gotta keep on trying)
Don't turn away, don't turn away
This song was finally practiced and performed by The Barbarians themselves (with Moulty at the drums, of course!) ... and, after their set, fans would go backstage or wherever they could find him and, often with tears in their eyes, tell Moulty how the song had changed their lives ... given them hope ... and, in a few cases, even stopped them from attempting suicide!
Now ... in my recent conversations with Moulty (now a successful businessman, motivational speaker and, yes, married -- and still drumming with a new lineup of Barbarians!), he told me that people are still stopping him backstage or wherever they can find him to thank him for the message of hope that his song conveyed.
Since I couldn't find a vid of the song on YouTube, here's one of the band doing You Just Don't Understand.
So, with that, I'm gonna cut off the machine for about 360 (even Relics have gotta sleep sometime!). But tune in tomorrow night for more, okay?
Until then, remember: Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music ...
and I'll see ya on the flip side!
